If today’s transport observer thinks of the development of the modern Diesel-electric locomotive solely in terms of mighty General Motors and its ElectroMotive Division, he has looked at only a small part of the story. Important as Electro-Motive’s contribution was, it played a secondary role to the pioneering efforts of such builders as the American Locomotive Company, Baldwin, General Electric, Ingersoll-Rand, and Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing. Yes, the old-line steam locomotive builders were among the first to experiment and produce internal combustion locomotive power. And no less a figure than Baldwin’s legendary Samuel A. Vauclain predicted a bright future for the Diesel, once this power had properly evolved into a steady and stable prime mover.
Here is the story of the development of the Diesel on American rails, written by one man who was personally involved in three decades of Diesel progress. John Kirkland was chief inspector of Diesel locomotives for Baldwin, and was responsible for setting up and running the first Diesel locomotive inspection department for his company. Later he was placed in charge of Diesel locomotive production for Baldwin, independent of steam locomotive manufacturing. He stayed with Baldwin, and successors until 1970.
