Formed in 1901 with the merger of eight separate locomotive manufacturing plants into a single corporate structure, the American Locomotive Company’s entrance into the field of building Diesel locomotives had its inception in the mid-’20s when the company took part in a joint venture project with General Electric and Ingersoll-Rand to build a standard line of commercially acceptable Diesel-electric locomotives. Concurrent with this venture, the company also entered into a development program with the New York Central, with the purpose of designing and building higher horsepower, prototype Diesel locomotives for freight and passenger road service.
From these beginnings in Diesel locomotive manufacture, Alco moved forward in developing its own line of production models, beginning with switchers, and moving on to road passenger and freight units, and roadswitchers.
In 1940, the Montreal Locomotive Works began acting as Alco’s agent in Canada for soliciting the sale of Diesel locomotives built at Alco’s Schenectady (New York) Works, and by 1948, MLW was manufacturing complete locomotives built to Alco designs.
The complete history of these two builders’ Diesel locomotive manufacture, the models, and totals built and shipped to domestic customers, is complemented with yet another treasury of rare photographs assembled by author John F. Kirkland, along with an all-time builder’s list for MLW up to the time it passed from Alco’s control to Canadian ownership.
