Santana and Friends Montreux Jazz Festival
Montreux, Switzlerland July 12, 2004
30 minutes PAL format - proshot
1. Opening
2. Santana, Mclaughlin & Nobs chat
3. The Light At The Edge Of The World
4. More talk with Carlos, John & Claude
5. Repetitions (Santana)
6. Buddy Guy with Santana blues jam
7. Jingo (Santana)
8. Hymns For Peace (all star jam)
The last track features Carlos' band along with:
Wayne Shorter - sax
Chic Corea - keys
John Mclaughlin - guitar
Dennis Chambers - drums
Herbie Hancock - keys
Ravi Coltrane - clarinette
Much of the conversation during the talking portions is
in French. Carlos, or course, speaks English, but John
and Claude speak in French. The duet played by Carlos
and John appears to be entirely impromptu - as Carlos was
told by the MC (who was referring to a guitar), "There is
another Carlos if you want to play." The blues jam with
Buddy Guy is some of the most inspired Santana guitar
playing I've seen in a long time - really getting back to
his roots: good, hardcore guitar jamming. The last tune
has an all-star cast of musicians, but really mostly
features the Wayne Shorter and Ravi Coltrane.
John Mclaughlin never solos and in fact, he's playing a
solid body guitar that I'm sure is not one of his guitars.
The studio portion of the French television show
"Trafic Musique" was filmed on July 22, 2004 and broadcast
on August 1, 2004
