It was written by Andrew Frampton, Williams and Solange Knowles, and produced by Wayne Wilkins and Frampton for William\'s third studio album Unexpected (2008) \"We Break the Dawn\" was nominated for one award from New Now Next Music Awards 2008 for Best R&B Vocal Performance By a Female Artist. . It was released as the album\'s leading single on the People.com website on March 31, 2008.

The music video for the song was shot on April 23 in Los Angeles, California.[5] It premiered on May 20, 2008 and was directed by Phil Griffin. It features Williams dancing in a empty city with her background dancers.
