Par un beau matin d’été fut, aux dires même de son réalisateur, Jacques Deray, un film de “concessions”. Lui voulait tourner un film noir, simple et efficace, et avait été séduit par le roman de Chase et son histoire de double kidnapping. On lui donna Belmondo et Audiard, qui fit du “sur mesure” pour l’acteur alors en pleine vogue. Résultat : Deray eut beau tailler dans les dialogues, pour leur enlever leur côté “brillants”, il n’en fit pas moins un polar édulcoré qui ne satisfit personne. Chase trouva ce film, malgré les différences, très proche du livre dans son essence. Le film se joue dans le Midi de la France et en Espagne alors que le roman se déroule en Amérique.

On the Côte d’Azur, Francis and his sister Monique make a comfortable living by dubious means. Monique lures men to her bedroom where, in the course of their lovemaking, they are surprised by Francis, who demands financial reparation to avoid a scandal. Bored with this way of life, Francis and Monique allow a hoodlum to talk them into participating in a kidnapping that will earn them millions in one fell swoop. In Spain, they succeed in abducting the teenage daughter of a wealthy man, but all too soon the plan begins to unravel, with dramatic consequences...

In combutta con due criminali Francis e sua sorella sequestrano la figlia di un miliardario. Ottenuto il riscatto, tutto precipita. Dal romanzo One Bright Summer Morning (Mezzanotte di fuoco, 1963) di James Hadley Chase un noir di discreta tensione, non privo di sottigliezze nello scandaglio psicologico. 3° film di J. Deray, stimato artigiano di drammi criminali
