It's week 3 of the heats, and the latest new home cooks are ready to bring their A-game to the kitchen. If the contestants reach the standards expected of them, they could claim a MasterChef apron – taking them through to the next stage to cook for some very special guests. The amateurs include a radiographer, a lawyer and a teacher, who will each have to turn a humble ingredient from Basic to Brilliant. The picks include hazelnuts and a piece of cod, but whatever they choose must shine on a plate showing real potential. There are only two aprons up for grabs in this round, so everyone will need to put their best foot forward. If their first dish falls short, there’s still another chance for the remaining cooks in an invention test with a difference – the Mystery Box. The contestants will be given three secret ingredients and must use at least one of them in their dish, along with any other larder items of their choice. The mystery ingredients are three different types of pastry: filo, shortcrust and puff. The contenders have 45 minutes to rustle up their spectacular creations, but those pipped to the pastry post will be sent home. The hopefuls left standing will then battle for a quarter-final place. To get there, they must cook a delicious two-course menu for three discerning diners from 2022 – champion Eddie Scott and runners-up Pookie Tredell and Radha Kaushal-Bolland. These three know what it takes to reach the final, and nothing will escape their keen eyes. It will take some top-notch cooking to win them over. With the guests’ feedback helping to determine which hopefuls are up to the challenge of a quarter-final, the successful contestants will take the next step towards becoming MasterChef Champion 2025.

It’s the second heat of the week, and another cohort of brave cooks are geared up for the challenge of a lifetime. They will each be hoping to win one of the four MasterChef aprons on offer – their ticket to the rest of the competition. Basic to Brilliant is their first challenge. They have just 80 minutes to create a delicious dish that shows off an everyday ingredient. Sugar, pasta and mussels are amongst the picks here, all with the potential to showcase plates packed with skill and flavour. The standout cooks will be MasterChef apron-worthy and head straight for the next round, leaving the others with one more chance to impress. Who gets to wear one of the aprons up for grabs will be determined by the Mystery Box. The task is to rustle up a tasty treat using at least one of three secret ingredients: coffee, chocolate and plums. Get ready for some culinary invention of the highest order as the contestants raid the larder and spend the next 45 minutes creating their masterpiece. The strongest contenders will fly into the next round. The contenders left standing must deliver a two-course menu for three diners who might well have a reason to empathise with the amateurs, as they have been all been here before. MasterChef 2021 champion Tom Rhodes, 2018 champion Kenny Tutt, and 2021 finalist Alexina Anatole will all sample the menus on offer to determine who has what it takes to follow in their footsteps. Will their verdicts be what the cooks are dreaming of, or will the outcome send the hopefuls down a different path? Only the best will move forward into this week’s quarter-final, where the pressure ramps up and next-level cooking takes centre stage.

The strongest cooks from the week's heats return for the quarter-final. To stand any chance of staying in the competition, they will need to prove that their journey up to this point was not down to luck but due to sheer talent. A place in knockout week is at stake. Esteemed food critic and writer Jimi Famurewa is back in the MasterChef kitchen to set the brief. He’s a huge fan of modern American cuisine and would like the amateurs to prepare a dish that shows the hugely varied food styles of this vast nation. Whether they opt for some deep south soul food, some Tex-Mex tacos or a classic key lime pie, their dish will need to set Jimi’s taste buds alight, making him feel like he’s had a fleeting visit across the Atlantic. The three who deliver an American dream will earn themselves a place in knockout week, where they will join the best cooks from the other quarter-finals for a showdown like no other.
