The next group of home cooks are ready for a culinary battle in the second week of heats. The contestants will need to hit the ground running as they attempt to win an exclusive MasterChef apron - their ticket to the rest of the competition. The best on the day might also have the honour of calling themselves a quarter-finalist.
The debut contestants join their benches for the first time to take on the Basic to Brilliant challenge. This is their chance to shine a light on a humble, everyday ingredient and turn it into something brilliant. Their dish can include any number of items from the packed larder, but the ingredient of choice must shine. Short ribs, onions and chicken thighs all make special appearances tonight, but how will they turn out? Only the best cooks will move straight through to the next round, leaving the others to cook off for the last two aprons. The Mystery Box awaits, giving those without an apron a second chance. They will need to prepare a delicious plate of food using at least one of the secret ingredients hidden in their box and an array of items from the larder. While it sounds simple, they need to meet the judges’ expectations by creating a flavoursome dish in only 45 minutes. The secret stash includes tinned pineapple, ham and sweetcorn. Turn these into a tasty treat, and they stand every chance of nabbing a coveted MasterChef apron. Next, one final challenge awaits the contenders through from the first two rounds, as they will need to delight some special guests with their best two-course menu. Dining tonight are 2011 champion Tim Anderson, 2013 champion Natalie Coleman and 2013 finalist Larkin Cen. They will be expecting to see plates full of personality and ambition that also show true potential. The three best-performing hopefuls will return for this week’s quarter-final, leaving the others to hang up their aprons and head home.

E05 This week’s second heat welcomes new hopefuls to take on the cooking competition. A personal trainer, a carer and a teacher are amongst those taking part, and the contenders will need to jump straight into action as they cook off for one of the MasterChef aprons. The contestants get right to it with the first task: Basic to Brilliant. This is an opportunity for the home cooks to show what they are made of as they turn their chosen everyday staple into a dish worthy of a top-notch feast. The plate will need to be a harmonious blend of flavours with a decent dollop of flair. The two who come out on top get new aprons and put their feet up, leaving the other contestants to cook again. The Mystery Box will decide the fate of the remaining cooks. They need to rustle up something delicious by using at least one of the secret ingredients: parsnip, strawberries and chicken livers. Blending all three might not be the best idea, but stranger things have happened. This is one challenge that the amateurs won’t want to mess up, as those who fail to make the grade will be saying their goodbyes.
The pressure is ramped up in the final round as the contenders still standing return to their stoves. They must pull out all the stops as they cook for three guest diners: 2007 champion Steven Wallis, 2020 champion Thomas Frake and 2018 semi-finalist Nisha Parmar. They all know the standard needed to succeed, but producing eight plates of food in 75 minutes is no easy task. Will the diners’ verdict match the cooks’ aspirations? The end of the round reveals which cooks are worthy of a quarter-final place as the race for this year’s champion hots up.

E06 The six best cooks from the week’s heats come together for the first time. There will be no time for chit-chat, as just one task will separate them from a place in knockout week. Only the best will make it. The inimitable Grace Dent makes a gracious return to set the brief. Inspired by memories of picnics in the Lake District with her mum, she wants the quarter-finalists to create the perfect spread, which must include two savoury items and one sweet. Imagination can truly run wild with this one, but Grace expects everything to taste completely dreamy. These are her childhood memories, after all. The cooks have 90 minutes to push the boat out and put a smile on Grace's face. Those who impress in the kitchen the most will be rewarded with a place in knockout week.
