I too am autistic, and middle-aged! I can tell you it's a life-long problem. The issues never go away, they just get worse over time.
The typical life expectancy of an autistic male is 54 years (my age), and for females it's 56. We expect to lose on average 20+ years of life.
The top 3 killers of autistic people: 1. Heart disease, 2. Cancer, 3. Suicide. All preventable, and all come with advance warning that something is wrong (well mostly they do). But an autistic existence is so miserable and lonely, we don't act on the warning signs when we could, because we don't want to. We know what's coming and still don't do anything.

The issue that causes the most trouble is masking. I mask so well you'd never know I was autistic. I could be standing right next to you, and you wouldn't know. Masking takes from us more than it helps. That's the problem.

It's now officially Autism Awareness month here in the UK (what's left of it). Read (listen :) ) and take note, do you know someone with these behaviour patterns? Get them tested ASAP, it could save their life.
