Charlot, assunto come inserviente in un circo, suscita, con i suoi gesti maldestri, l'ilarità del pubblico che, richiamato dalla sua presenza, accorre sempre più numeroso. Pur senza saperlo, egli diventa ben presto l'attrazione numero uno dello spettacolo, ma, mentre il circo prospera, la sua posizione e la sua paga restano uguali. Finalmente, una giovane trapezista sua amica, Myrna, gli rivela la verità, riuscendo a fargli ottenere un aumento di stipendio. Segretamente innamorato di lei, Charlot si illude, in seguito alla predizione di una chiromante, di essere l'uomo destinato a sposarla. Il fortunato, invece, è Rex, l'equilibrista. Divenuto incapace di far ridere e, per questo, minacciato di licenziamento, Charlot si allena segretamente sulla corda per diventare come Rex e una sera, in sua assenza, viene chiamato a sostituirlo. La sua esibizione scontenta il proprietario e viene licenziato. Per stargli accanto, Myrna abbandona il circo, ma Charlot, generosamente, fa in modo che Rex la raggiunga e la sposi.
