The film, which premiered out of competition at the closing of the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, was Hitchcock's last feature.
Hitchcock takes a witty, lightly and elegantly farewell to his audience: the last shot is the close-up of Blanche winking at the viewer. «Hitchcock's cinema is full of metaphorically complicit glances with the viewer, but this was never explicit on a gestural level of image. We had to wait for what is the last shot of a fifty-year filmography to arrive at this sort of declaration of intent, of public confession "
The choice of title was complicated. A few days before the last shoot, in July 1975, a play on words based on the double meaning of family plot was proposed to Hitchcock; that is: family plot (a dramatic plot involving various members of a family) and area in a cemetery (purchased by a family for the burial of their relatives). The director found it sufficiently ambiguous.
